Memorial Day and Urban Schools

What does Memorial day have to do with Urban Education? My initial guess is that a larger than standard percentage of young people from the inner-city join the armed forces as a way out or a way to pay for higher education. In the suburbs, for the most part, Memorial Day is just a three day weekend with a parade that kicks off the summer. However, if my theory was right, than the holiday would have more meaning in the inner-city where a larger percentage of people would be remembering family members that may have lost their lives in the military.

I decided to do some 'quick and dirty' research online to see if this was accurate. The fascinating statistics I found on a website are from 2005 discuss a number of different attributes about recruits, but here I'm only discussing my theory that a disproportionate percent of the military comes fromthe city (http://www.heritage.org/research/nationalsecurity/cda05-08.cfm).

Instead of proving my theory, this study shows that entirely urban areas are the most underrepresented among military recruits, as compared to the actual percentage of the population.

So, what does Memorial Day have to do with Urban Schools? At the moment, the only thing I can think of is that the schools are closed for the holiday!

My thought on this topic was the same. I think I read too far into the subject than I was supposed to when writing mine! What is the relation or was this a topic to get our minds to think? I guess we'll find out in class?!
